The first novel, Horus Rising by Dan Abnett, opens in the 31st millennium during the Great Crusade, as the Emperor of Mankind withdraws from the front lines and names Horus Lupercal — Primarch of the Luna Wolves Legion — Warmaster of the Imperium. The book follows Horus and the soldiers of the Imperium as the first signs of rebellion appear on the eve of galactic civil war.

Black Library published the series from April 2006 to January 2024, when The End and the Death: Volume III concluded it. Multiple authors contributed to the line, which Black Library developed into a distinct product line. Titles have appeared on bestseller lists, and the work has received critical approval. The novels' popularity contributed to a tabletop wargame spin-off launched by Forge World in 2012, later relaunched as Warhammer: The Horus Heresy in 2022. A sequel series, The Scouring, began publication in December 2025.

Our take

Is The Horus Heresy worth reading?

Book by book, from our reviews. Ratings are Amazon readers'.

Book 1

Horus Rising

4.7 · 9,356 Amazon ratings

Worth reading if you're drawn to dramatic irony, morally complex characters, and world-building that rewards patience — and you're prepared to begin a sweeping, multi-decade series rather than a self-contained story.

Skip it if you're looking for a fast-paced, action-first military sci-fi novel with a satisfying standalone resolution — Abnett deliberately subordinates plot momentum to character and theme, and the series demands a long-term commitment across dozens of volumes and multiple authors.

Book 2

False Gods

Worth reading if you've read Horus Rising and want to experience the single most consequential turning point in the entire Horus Heresy saga rendered with escalating tension, sharp foreshadowing, and genuine body-horror-inflected action.

Skip it if you're new to Warhammer 40,000 or haven't read Horus Rising — the emotional weight of Horus's fall depends entirely on the attachment and lore context built in that preceding volume.

Book 3

Galaxy in Flames

4.7 · 5,306 Amazon ratings

Worth reading if you're invested in the Horus Heresy series and want the essential, cannot-be-skipped volume in which Horus's betrayal moves from conspiracy to catastrophic, history-altering fact.

Skip it if you're new to the series or arriving from literary science fiction expecting deep psychological interiority — the emotional stakes won't land without the two preceding volumes, and some readers find the execution more workmanlike than the gravity of the moment demands.
