McNeill explains that the Horus Heresy was originally envisioned as a much shorter series of perhaps eleven to fourteen books. The authors had no idea how massively popular it would become or how deeply readers would invest in the setting.
McNeill confirms that the biblical and Miltonic parallels in False Gods were entirely intentional. Horus spending nine days in the Serpent Lodge was a direct parallel to the nine days it took Lucifer to fall from heaven to hell in Paradise Lost.
McNeill explains that Petronella Vivar's arc was inspired by the torture scene in Reservoir Dogs. He deliberately wrote her to be unlikable so readers would cheer against her, only to be horrified and feel complicit when she meets her brutal fate.
McNeill notes that early Warhammer lore portrayed Horus as being literally possessed by a daemon on Davin. The authors decided it was dramatically far stronger if Horus retained his agency and actively chose treachery based on manipulated truths.
McNeill confirms that the vision scene in False Gods featuring a character refusing to wear two orange squares of cloth is a deliberate Easter egg referencing the Cheese Man from the season four finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
