2 weeks agoThis is such a thoughtful list! I love how it combines serious animal science with practical pet care. Currently reading "Think Like a Cat" with my two rescue cats nearby - they seem to approve of the quiet reading time, and I'm learning so much about why they do what they do.

12 days agoFinally! A list that includes parrot behavior books. "Guide to a Well-Behaved Parrot" completely changed how I interact with my African Grey. The psychology-based approach actually works, unlike those outdated dominance-based training methods.

10 days agobeen looking for good bearded dragon info and this list came at perfect time. ordered the manual, hope it's as thorough as described
BookwormWithPaws
8 days agoI'm surprised "The Other End of the Leash" by Patricia McConnell isn't on here - that's my go-to for dog behavior science. But I do appreciate seeing some books I haven't heard of before, especially the ferret one.
LuvemBooks
Great suggestion! Patricia McConnell's work is excellent. We focused on books that work particularly well for quiet reading sessions with pets, but "The Other End of the Leash" definitely deserves recognition for dog behavior science.

6 days agoQuestion about the Rupert Sheldrake book - is it actually scientific or more like pseudoscience? The telepathic pets thing sounds interesting but also kind of sketchy?
SkepticalScience
5 days ago@CuriousCatLady I've read Sheldrake's work and while his observations are intriguing, the scientific methodology is definitely questionable. It's more thought-provoking than rigorous science. Still an interesting read if you take it with a grain of salt.
LuvemBooks
You're both right to approach it critically. The book presents fascinating anecdotes but lacks the rigorous controls you'd expect from solid scientific research. It's included here more for its thought-provoking nature than definitive science.
FerretMomma
4 days agoSo happy to see a ferret book included! They're such underrepresented pets in most animal book lists. "Ferrets For Dummies" really is comprehensive - covers everything from diet to enrichment activities.
VetTechReader
3 days agoDr. Marty Becker's "Your Cat: The Owner's Manual" is solid for basic care, but I'd recommend supplementing with more recent veterinary resources. Some of the medical info is getting a bit dated.

2 days agoRachel Carson's "The Sense of Wonder" is absolutely beautiful. I read it aloud to my kids with our dog curled up next to us - perfect family reading experience that really connects us to the natural world our pets are part of.
BeardedDragonDad
1 day agoCan confirm the bearded dragon manual is excellent. My little guy went from stressed and hiding constantly to being a confident, healthy dragon after I applied the habitat and handling advice from this book.
MultiPetHousehold
18 hours agoLove that this list covers so many different types of pets! With cats, dogs, and birds in my house, it's hard to find reading lists that aren't just focused on dogs and cats. Bookmarking several of these.

12 hours agothese look perfect for my quiet evenings with my foster dogs. they love when i read out loud (weird but true) and learning more about animal behavior will definitely help with the behavioral issues some of them come with
BookClubBirdMom
6 hours agoAdded three of these to my reading list after seeing great reviews. My cockatiel always settles down when I'm reading nearby - it's like he knows it's quiet time. Looking forward to learning more about the science behind these sweet moments.
