William Shakespeare

English
1564 – 1616
William Shakespeare wrote Macbeth and Twelfth Night. Twelfth Night is a comedic play built on mistaken identity and love in the fictional duchy of Illyria, where Viola disguises herself as a man; its several romantic plots are fitted into one theatrical structure. The play shows the verbal play and quick turns of phrase that mark his comedies.
Macbeth belongs in the same brief account of Shakespeare’s work: it is one of his plays, while Twelfth Night remains a clear example of his comic method. That method joins disguise, misunderstanding, and competing desire, then draws the strands toward a close. His language gives characters distinct voices while keeping scenes readable aloud, one reason his scripts continue to be printed, studied, and performed.
