Becky Chambers

American
Born 1985
Becky Chambers is an American science fiction writer. She is the author of the Hugo Award-winning Wayfarers series, whose books include The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. Alongside the series she has written shorter fiction, among them the standalone novella To Be Taught, If Fortunate (2019), and she began the Monk & Robot series in 2021. Her work moves between large-scale space settings and smaller, self-contained stories rather than relying on a single continuing narrative.
Chambers is known for innovative worldbuilding and character-driven stories, and she is a pioneer of the hopepunk genre. Across her books she tends to foreground crews, families, and communities, letting invented cultures, languages, and technologies emerge through daily routines and relationships. The Wayfarers novels and her shorter fiction share that emphasis on how people live together, placing cooperation and individual choice at the center of speculative settings rather than treating them as background.
