Cassandra Clare's final Shadowhunters trilogy begins on 3 November, when The Last King of Faerie arrives as the opening volume of The Wicked Powers, Collider reports.
It is the first of three books intended to bring the saga to its close.
The novel is published by Knopf Books for Young Readers, and the audiobook is read by James Marsters, according to Cosmopolitan's exclusive excerpt. The same piece confirms the 3 November 2026 release date.

Nearly twenty years on: where The Last King of Faerie sits in the saga

Clare began publishing the Shadowhunters universe in 2007 with City of Bones, the first Mortal Instruments novel. Screen Rant notes that the series has been a bestseller with multiple adaptations, and that it now enters its final trilogy nearly twenty years later.
In a Publishers Weekly interview, Clare describes herself as being at the beginning of the end of the series. The piece's headline quotes her saying she doesn't have to hold back.
The framing matters for long-running fantasy: a final trilogy signals a deliberate endpoint rather than an open-ended continuation. Clare's publisher bills the book as the first instalment of the "long-awaited concluding trilogy" to the Shadowhunter Chronicles, per Penguin Random House.

Dru, Ash and a Faerie prison: the set-up

The story centres on Drusilla Blackthorn, first introduced in The Dark Artifices, per the Publishers Weekly interview. Penguin Random House's description places her in her fourth year at Shadowhunter Academy when a chance encounter at a nightclub turns into a kidnapping.
Dru ends up held prisoner by Prince Ash Morgenstern in Faerie, a place described as just as dangerous as it is beautiful. Meanwhile, a shocking disappearance shakes the Shadowhunter world, and Kit Herondale and Ty Blackthorn must set aside lingering bitterness and join forces on a perilous quest, as Walker Books Australia's listing summarises.
Ash, according to United By Pop, is the son of Sebastian Morgenstern and the Seelie Queen. He was taken through a portal to Thule at the end of Queen of Air and Darkness.

What the release signals for Clare's readers

For readers who have followed the Shadowhunters across the Mortal Instruments, Dark Artifices and later series, the new trilogy pulls together threads from several earlier books. Ash's lineage and Dru's history tie directly back to those earlier volumes, so this is not a fresh starting point.
The first edition hardcover is described by Penguin Random House as featuring sprayed edges, full-colour illustrated endpapers and a foil-stamped case. The Last King of Faerie is published on 3 November 2026, and we have not yet reviewed it.
