Gina Gionfriddo's stage version of Thomas Harris's The Silence of the Lambs has been playing New Theatre Oxford from 19 to 24 October 2026, as part of a UK and Ireland tour. The Oxfordshire Guardian's review of the Oxford run describes the production as 'Adapted by playwright Gina Gionfriddo from Thomas Harris's multi-million-selling novel'.
The Oxford week is one stop on a long itinerary, and further dates are still to come.
A new play, a long tour
According to the production's Wikipedia entry), the play was scheduled to premiere at Curve in Leicester in August 2026 before touring the UK and Ireland until June 2027. John Partridge plays Hannibal Lecter and Mollie Gallagher plays Clarice Starling.
Curve's own announcement billed the Leicester opening as a world stage premiere and said the production would tour the UK afterwards. The Lowry in Salford has also listed the production among its dates.
The tour has already moved through several venues. East Midlands Theatre published a review on 30 September 2026 of the Milton Keynes Theatre run, which ended on 3 October 2026.
How the Oxford run has been received
Oxford reviewers have offered a mix of reactions. West End Best Friend wrote that the adaptation, written by Gionfriddo and directed by Nikolai Foster, 'delivers an interesting theatrical take on the story, although it doesn't quite capture the tension or fear' of the source material.
Others were warmer. Ox in a Box's review of the Oxford run is headlined 'extremely unsettling', with 'superb performances' and 'palpable' chemistry.
Newbury Today's Jon Lewis noted that the show is inspired by Harris's 1988 psychological novel and Jonathan Demme's Oscar-laden 1991 film.
The Silence of the Lambs: 25th Anniversary Edition and its stage afterlife
Harris's novel has long since passed into the wider culture through Demme's film, and this play is a new attempt to carry the story into the theatre. Stage adaptations of well-known thrillers face a particular challenge, since audiences arrive with the film's imagery already in mind.
Reviewers' differing views on how much fear the production generates reflect that challenge.
The Silence of the Lambs: 25th Anniversary Edition presents Harris's story of FBI trainee Clarice Starling and her encounters with Hannibal Lecter, according to its Barnes & Noble listing. Further UK and Ireland dates are listed on the official production site, and the novel itself remains the best place to meet the story on the page.
