Ed Yong Announces Third Book, Life Beyond Measure, for April 2027

Ed Yong has announced Life Beyond Measure, his third book, due in April 2027. Here is what is confirmed so far about the follow-up to An Immense World.

Ed Yong has announced his third book. According to the author's official website, Life Beyond Measure will be published in April 2027.
Listings from Penguin Random House carry the title and a full description, and retailer pages give a 6 April 2027 date.

What Life Beyond Measure is about

Penguin Random House describes the book as an exploration of how living things operate at different scales, meaning the blend of size, range, pace, longevity and influence that shapes a life. The publisher's blurb contrasts a blue whale crossing the oceans with a bacterium in a drop of seawater, and asks readers to look beyond the human scale as life's default.
The same description promises fireflies assembling a luminous chorus, a bristlecone pine in its fifth millennium, and an ant colony that develops a personality. Amy Tan, author of The Backyard Bird Chronicles, is quoted on the publisher's page calling it "a tour de force".

The follow-up to An Immense World

It was a New York Times bestseller, as the publisher's description of the new book points out.
Where that book was about how animals perceive the world, the new one, going by the publisher's account, turns from perception to scale. The framing is similar in spirit, pulling readers out of the human vantage point, but the organising idea is different.
Yong's earlier work is a useful guide to the likely approach. His books have tended to take a single idea and follow it across many species, and the publisher's blurb for this one suggests the same method, ranging from the microscopic to the very large and very long-lived.
We have not reviewed the book, which is still more than a year from publication. For now, the confirmed details are the title, the April 2027 timing and the publisher's description of its subject.
