Richard Osman's We Chase Shadows Is Out: We Solve Murders Book 2

We Chase Shadows, the second book in Richard Osman's We Solve Murders series, came out in September 2026: 10 September in the UK and 15 September in the US. It is not a Thursday Murder Club book.

We Chase Shadows, the second book in Richard Osman's We Solve Murders series, is out now. Viking published it in hardback in the UK on 10 September 2026 (Radio Times), and Pamela Dorman Books in the US on 15 September (Penguin Random House).
It is not a Thursday Murder Club book. It continues the series Osman began with We Solve Murders in 2024, and a sixth Thursday Murder Club novel is a separate book still to come.

What the book is about

Amy Wheeler, her father-in-law Steve and the novelist Rosie D'Antonio, the trio from We Solve Murders, take on their first proper case. A body is found on the steps of a private villa in the Italian hills, carrying a threatening note signed by a mystery man, according to the publisher.
The chase runs between Italy and Palm Springs, via Barcelona and Steve's village pub. Osman promised “lots of thrills, lots of laughs, and lots of murders” when he announced it (Radio Times).

Editions and dates

In the UK it is a Viking hardback, published on 10 September 2026 (Radio Times). In the US, the Pamela Dorman hardcover ($31.00) and ebook came out on 15 September (Penguin Random House).
A US large-print edition follows on 10 November 2026 (Penguin Random House). Nicola Walker reads the audiobook.

What about the Thursday Murder Club?

Osman's literary agency, Mushens Entertainment, announced that the second We Solve Murders book and the sixth Thursday Murder Club book would be published in the US across 2026 and 2027. No title or date has been announced for the sixth Thursday Murder Club book.
The five Thursday Murder Club books so far are in order on our reading order page. Netflix's film of The Thursday Murder Club came out in 2025 (Deadline).

A Netflix series of We Solve Murders

Osman has said a series based on We Solve Murders is in the works at Netflix, Deadline reported on 6 September 2026. Netflix hasn't given it a date.

Where to start

Readers new to the trio should begin with We Solve Murders, which introduces Amy, Steve and Rosie. We Chase Shadows picks up with them working as a team.
Correction, 13 October 2026: an earlier version of this story called We Chase Shadows the sixth Thursday Murder Club novel and, in its FAQ, a standalone. It is the second We Solve Murders book; the story has been rewritten and retitled.

Setting Books Only in Visited Places

Osman explains that because of his visual impairment, navigating unfamiliar places and airports is difficult and stressful, so he only sets his books in locations he has personally visited.

“I don't love travelling, so I always set it in places I have already been.”

Living with Nystagmus and Blurred Vision

Osman describes nystagmus as causing constant eye movement, resulting in his brain seeing a blurred, haloed version of the world comparable to driving in thick fog.

“The world is just blurred to me.”

Developing Workarounds from School Days

Osman recalls never admitting in school that he couldn't see the blackboard to avoid drawing attention, instead training himself to listen closely and develop independent methods to keep up.

“I never, ever said, 'I can't see the board.'”

Character Conception Based on Vibes

Osman shares that editors often note he never describes characters' physical appearances, because his blurred vision makes him perceive people through tone, manner, and overall vibe rather than visuals.

“I get a vibe of the person, which is how I experience people.”

Unplanned Writing and Emergent Storytelling

Osman does not use diagrams, spreadsheets, or detailed plot outlines when writing, preferring to let characters speak to one another and allow the story to reveal itself organically as he writes.

“I don't write my plots in advance.”

Neurodiversity and Disability as Creative Advantage

Osman argues that growing up with a disability forces individuals to spend thousands of hours thinking outside the box, building unique problem-solving skills that AI and conventional thinkers cannot replicate.

“You've got 10,000 hours of experience of thinking in a way that other people haven't.”
