The Hunt for Red October

The Hunt for Red October is Tom Clancy's debut novel, first published in 1984 by the Naval Institute Press, following CIA analyst Jack Ryan as he races to prove that Soviet submarine commander Marko Ramius is defecting to the United States aboard the ballistic missile submarine Red October — before both superpowers destroy each other trying to stop him. It is the novel credited with bringing the techno-thriller genre into the mainstream, and its cultural footprint — from a presidential endorsement to a blockbuster film — remains unmatched in the genre.
