Audition is a Japanese novel by Ryu Murakami, first published in 1997 and translated into English by Ralph McCarthy, in which 42-year-old widower Aoyama arranges a fake film audition to find a new wife — and becomes dangerously fixated on the 24-year-old Yamasaki Asami. Its reputation as a slow-burn descent into violence and psychological horror, later immortalized by Takashi Miike's film adaptation, makes it essential reading for fans of transgressive fiction.
