In Orson Scott Card's own words

Understanding Ender through sequels

Card notes that Ender began as a stock romantic hero with little depth, and it was only while exploring the character's guilt in Speaker for the Dead and later Ender in Exile that he truly understood him.

Testing young children is pure fantasy

Card considers Battle School's testing and selection system to be completely unrealistic. He argues that intelligence and ability cannot be reliably measured in young children because achievement stems from choice and thousands of hours of practice.

Ender's leadership modeled on Stonewall Jackson

Card explains that Ender Wiggin was conceived similarly to historical commanders like Stonewall Jackson, whose brilliance lay in inspiring absolute devotion from their soldiers rather than mere technical mastery.

Ender's Shadow was accidentally a parallel novel

Card originally intended to outline a series about the secondary child characters to be written collaboratively by other authors. However, once he began writing Bean's backstory on the streets of Rotterdam, the story expanded until it ran parallel to Ender's Game.
